Something Different

A while ago, I got a letter from my seven year old niece with a photo from a very ugly horse doll, and in the letter she wrote if I can "sew her a doll like that". (There was also a saying on the envelope like "where there's a will there's a way"...).

Vor einiger Zeit habe ich von meiner siebenjährigen Nichte einen Brief bekommen, mit einem Foto von einer (ziemlich hässlichen) Pferdepuppe, und der Frage "kannst du mir auch so eine Puppe nähen?". (Auf dem Umschlag stand übrigens noch der Spruch "Wenn du fest an eine Sache glaubst, dann wird sie dir gelingen"... was sagt man dazu?). 

Well, as you can see, the ugly horse doll is not sewn but knitted. And I know how to knit and purl but I'm not skilled enough to figure out how to make a doll like that. Luckily, I remembered this book about knitted dolls, so I bought it and showed it to my niece when she came for a visit. The plan succeeded! She forgot about the horse doll and now wanted to have a human doll like the very cute ones in the book. I let her chose the colors of the hair, eyes, tights and clothes of the future doll, and started.

Nun ja, wie man sieht, war die Pferdepuppe auf dem Bild nicht genäht, sondern gestrickt. Und ich kann zwar rechte und linke Maschen, aber so eine Puppe ohne Anleitung hätte ich doch nicht geschafft. Glücklicherweise wusste ich, dass es ein sehr schönes Buch mit Anleitungen für gestrickte Puppen gibt, also habe ich es gekauft und meiner Nichte gezeigt, als sie zu Besuch war. Und der Plan ging voll auf: angesichts der vielen Fotos von lustigen und coolen Puppen in dem Buch war sie einverstanden, statt der Pferdepuppe eine menschliche zu bekommen. Sie durfte sich auch die Farben für die Strumpfhose, Kleider, Haare und Augen aussuchen.

Dann habe ich Wolle eingekauft und angefangen: erst die Beine (mit Strumpfhosen)...

...dann die Arme und das T-Shirt...

....und dann den Kopf. Der war ein bisschen knifflig. 

Then I let her grow some hair (and cut it)...
Danach habe ich der Puppe Haare wachsen lassen (und sie frisiert)...

...and the doll was finished. She got a blue dress with flowers on it...
...und schliesslich war der Puppenkörper fertig. Sie hat noch ein blaues Kleid bekommen...

...and finally a pink cardigan and a pair of shoes.
...und zum Schluss noch eine rosa Strickjacke und ein paar Schuhe. 

Now the doll is waiting to get into her new home, I hope that my niece will like her!
Jetzt wartet die Puppe nur noch darauf, in ihr neues Zuhause zu ziehen. Hoffentlich findet's meine Nichte gut!

Burdastyle Retro Spring Dress

This is the dress i just finished some days ago: the pattern is from Burdastyle magazine 1/2013, no. 106 (can be also found here).

Gerade vor ein paar Tagen ist es fertig geworden: mein Retro-Burda-Frühlingskleid. Der Schnitt ist aus der Burdastyle 1/2013, Nr. 106 (man kann den Schnitt auch hier einzeln herunterladen). 

The pattern is based on a vintage Burda model that they featured in their magazine in 1967. What a funny thing to find out that I own the issue with this very dress in it!

Der Schnitt ist ein alter Burda-Schnitt von 1967, in der modernen Burdastyle neu aufgelegt. Zufällig habe ich herausgefunden, dass ich sogar genau die alte Ausgabe mit diesem Kleid besitze!

I'm a bit surprised by the title of the page, though. Translated, it means "children's dresses for young women". Was it really attractive to the young women of the time to be dressed like children?

Die Überschrift zu dem Kleid hat mich allerdings etwas erstaunt. Fanden es die jungen Damen von damals wirklich erstrebenswert, Kleider im Stil von Kinderkleidern zu tragen??

The technical drawing in the old magazine. The pattern came in only one size. New Burda omitted two of the vertical seams, and distributed them in another way than vintage Burda did. Which is funny, as they tell in the new magazine that it is the very same model!

Die technische Zeichnung in der alten Burda-Ausgabe. Den Schnitt gab es nur in einer einzigen Grösse. Ausserdem hat die neue Burda zwei der Querteilungsnähte unterschlagen (es gibt in der Zeitschrift allerdings noch ein Modell mit vier Teilungsnähten), und sie hat diese Nähte auch anscheinend anders verteilt. Soviel zur angeblichen Originaltreue des Schnitts!

For my dress, I did not use any lace for the sleeves, nor did I embroider them with a thousand pearls as the vintage instruction say. I used wool crepe for the entire dress. To keep a bit of the vintage look, I did not use a hidden seam zipper, but instead a "normal" one, which I put in by hand in the center back. I just love when there are a few hand sewn seams in a garment like that!

Ich habe für mein Kleid Wollkrepp verwendet, auch für die Ärmel. Die habe ich weder aus Spitze genäht noch mit etwas über Tausend Perlen wie in der Vintage-Anleitung bestickt. Schliesslich wollte ich ein alltagstaugliches Kleid haben. Um trotzdem etwas retro zu bleiben, habe ich anstelle des Nahtreissverschlusses einen "normalen" verwendet, den ich per Hand eingenäht habe. Ausserdem liebe ich handgearbeitete Nähte an einem Kleidungsstück wie diesem!

I also lined the dress, to make sure that the wool crepe would not stick to my undergarments when moving around, and finished the lining hem with a bit of lace. (Before sewing on the lace, I hemmed the lining with my narrow hem foot, for practice.)

Ich habe das Kleid gefüttert, damit der Wollkrepp nicht an der Unterwäsche "kleben" bleibt. Den Futtersaum habe ich erst mit meinem Saumfuss umgenäht (nur zur Übung) und dann noch Spitze angenäht. 

The only issue I had was with the sleeves. I didn't make any test garment, only my usual alterations for Burdastyle patterns, but I found out that not only the sleeves themselves, but also the armholes were too small! I've never had that problem before, still wondering where that comes from. Are the sleeves in this pattern simply cut smaller or did I gain some weight on my upper arms and shoulders? I let the seams out as much as possible, and although the fit of the sleeve is still not great, I'm at least able to move my arms! I'll have to check on this... Hope you like my dress!

Das einzige Problem bei diesem Kleid waren die Ärmel. Ich habe kein Testmodell genäht, sondern nur die üblichen Änderungen für Burda-Schnitte vorab am Papierschnitt gemacht, und dachte, das müsste jetzt passen, wie sonst auch. Aber entweder sind die Ärmel bei diesem Modell sehr schmal geschnitten oder ich habe an den Oberarmen und Schultern mächtig zugelegt. Es waren nämlich sowohl die Ärmel wie auch die Armlöcher zu eng! Das Problem hatte ich vorher nie... Ich habe die Nahtzugaben maximal rausgelassen, und obwohl die Ärmel immer noch nicht perfekt passen und aussehen, kann ich jetzt wenigstens wieder meine Arme bewegen. Da muss ich mal bei den nächsten Projekten drauf achten... Das Kleid gefällt mir trotzdem!

No More Balloon Sleeves

I still need some warm blouses for winter, so I was searching all my Burdastyle magazines to find a nice pattern. I like no. 107 from the january 2010 issue. The fabric I wanted to use is a thin wool microfiber blend, and the original Burdastyle blouse was made in a chiffon, so I expected that I might get some issues with the heavier weight of the fabric, but all went well with that.

Ich brauche immer noch ein paar warme Oberteile für den Winter. Beim Durchblättern meiner Burda-Magazine hat mir das Modell 107 aus der Januar 2010-Ausgabe wirklich gut gefallen. Allerdings hatte ich einen Stoff aus einem Wolle-Mikrofaser-Gemisch, wohingegen das Originalmodell aus der Burda aus Chiffon ist. Ich habe also aus diesem Grund schon mit Problemen gerechnet, aber mit dem Stoff lief alles bestens. 

The blouse has some shirring in the front, a small standing collar, and a very clever closure: it opens at the front of the left shoulder and is closed with snaps and a button at the collar.

Die Bluse ist vorne in der Mitte gerüscht, hat einen kleinen Stehkragen, aber das Beste ist der Verschluss: eine Druckknopfleiste vorn an der linken Schulter, wirklich clever!

But... it has also long, wide and puffy sleeves! I always like them when I see them on the technical drawings, but unfortunately, they don't seem to do any benefits to my short arms.

Der Burda-Schnitt hat auch noch weite, lange Puffärmel. Ich liebe lange Puffärmel wenn ich sie auf Zeichnungen oder Fotos sehe. Sie sehen immer gleichzeitig bequem und elegant aus. Leider aber nicht an mir. Auf der Büste sah es noch gut aus. 

But when I was wearing it, I felt like I was wearing two balloons at my arms, making my arms look even shorter, something like that (I was too disappointed to take any photos):

Aber als ich die Bluse getragen habe, wirkten die Ärmel nur plump und meine eh schon kurzen Arme sahen noch kürzer aus. (Fotos habe ich nicht, ich war in dem Moment zu genervt.)

So I altered the sleeve pattern to have some medium width sleeves, cut the sleeves again (luckily there was enough fabric left, which was actually intended to become a dress), and set them in. Much better now! (Although a little bit less comfortable.)
It took me forever. I wasn't motivated at all to restart with the blouse after having already worn it, but I didn't like it how it was and the fabric has been too expensive to throw it all away. Now I can finally show you my new winter blouse - I don't need it anymore at the moment as spring has arrived in the meantime. But I'm looking forward to get a lot of wear out of it next winter (and I still wish I could wear wide ballony sleeves)!

Ich habe also die Ärmel wieder herausgetrennt, den Ärmelschnitt verschmälert und die Rüschung entfernt, und dann nochmal neu zugeschnitten und neu eingesetzt. Glücklicherweise war noch genug Stoff übrig (ich hatte eigentlich vor, aus dem Rest noch ein Kleid zu nähen). Jetzt gefällt es mir viel besser! (Die Ärmel sind jetzt allerdings eine Idee weniger bequem). 
Die Änderung hat ewig gedauert. Erst mal hatte ich schon keine Lust mehr, nochmal bei der Bluse nachzuarbeiten. Dann habe ich sehr lange überlegt, was ich überhaupt mit den Ärmeln machen soll. Der Stoff war zu teuer und zu schade, um alles einfach in die Tonne zu treten. Jetzt bin ich aber ganz zufrieden damit. Es hat jetzt nur so lange gedauert, dass inzwischen Frühling geworden ist und die Bluse einfach zu warm ist, um sie zu tragen. Macht aber nix, im nächsten Winter werde ich sie sicher gerne tragen!

Oh, and I'm also taking part in Me-Made-May'13. It was such a nice experience last year!

Ich habe mich zum Me-Made-May'13 angemeldet! Es war eine tolle Erfahrung letztes Jahr, und ich finde es so unglaublich, dass so viele Näherinnen aus der ganzen Welt daran teilnehmen und in Kontakt treten...

Fitting Mistakes

I have infected my friend N. with the sewing virus. About a year ago, she became interested in sewing and so I showed her the basics and told her all that I know. Now, she is starting to sew clothes on her own and when she needs help, she sends me a photo or we meet and I try my best to lead her through the process.
Her actual sewing project is Burdastyle's popular peplum top from the 8/2012 issue. And although we had made a muslin before, we had to face some serious fitting problems when the garment was almost finished.

Ich habe meine Freundin N. mit dem Nähvirus infiziert. Sie hat sich immer für meine Nähprojekte interessiert, und nachdem ich ihr vor etwa einem Jahr die Grundlagen beigebracht habe, näht sie selbst ihre eigenen Projekte. Wenn sie Hilfe braucht, schickt sie mir ein Foto oder wir treffen uns und ich bemühe mich, ihr weiter zu helfen. 
Ihr aktuelles Projekt ist das beliebte Schösschentop aus der Burdastyle 8/2012. Und obwohl wir vorher ein Probeteil gemacht hatten, sah das fast fertige Top gar nicht schön aus. 

As you can see on the (bad) photo (it was taken with an iPad), there was a lot of puckering at the armhole seam, and stress wrinkles which go from over the bust towards the armpits. The whole garment seams to be pulled to N.'s left side, which you can see at the neckline. (And the darts have not been properly pressed, but that is not a fitting issue.) So last week, we started to look for what was going wrong and how to save the top.

Wie man auf dem Bild sehen kann (trotz der schlechten Qualität, sie hat es schnell mit dem ipad aufgenommen), gibt es jede Menge kleiner Fältchen an der Armkugel, und Spannungsfalten über der Brust, die bis zu den Achseln verlaufen. Ausserdem scheint das ganze Top zu N.s linker Seite gezogen zu werden, was man am Halsausschnitt gut erkennen kann. (Die Abnäher sind auf dem Foto auch noch nicht richtig gebügelt, aber das war nicht das Hauptproblem.) Letzte Woche sind wir also der Sache nachgegangen. 

It turned out that something had gone wrong during finishing of the edges of the armhole seam allowances. After we removed the lining from the armholes and the finishing zigzag stitches, the sleeve puckers were almost completely gone. Maybe it has to do with the fabric which has some stretch in it? I don't know.

Erst einmal hat sich herausgestellt, dass wohl beim Versäubern des Armlochs irgend etwas schiefgegangen war. Denn schon als wir die Zickzack-Stiche aufgetrennt hatten, waren es schon etwas weniger Falten an der Armkugel. Vielleicht hatte das etwas mit dem Stoff zu tun, der Elasthan enthält. 

Next, the sleeves were taken out completely, followed by an endless basting the armhole seams, taking them out and rebasting them again, in order to eliminate the pulling to the left shoulder and the left puckers. At some point finally the shoulder seams sat right over the shoulder bones, and the puckering on the sleeve caps was gone. But the garment was still sitting too far left, looking at the neckline. Was it due to body asymmetry? What to do? And why didn't this problem appear in previous projects?

Danach haben wir die Ärmel komplett herausgetrennt und in mühevollem Rumprobieren eingeheftet, ausgetrennt, wieder eingeheftet... Irgendwann sassen dann die Ärmelnähte korrekt über den Schulterknochen, und die kleinen Fältchen in der Armkugel waren weg. Nur hatte es immer noch den Anschein, dass das ganze Kleidungsstück zur linken Seite gezogen würde. Wir dachten an eine Schulterasymmetrie, aber bisher war das Problem ja auch nicht aufgetreten...

After a lot of puzzling over it, I thought that maybe it wasn't a fitting problem at all. N. is still a beginner in sewing and maybe she hadn't sewn the neckline seam symmetrically? So we tried to correct this issue directly at the neckline seam and it seems to look better now. Whatever the problem really was.

Nach einigem Rumprobieren und Rätseln kam mir der Gedanke, dass das vielleicht gar kein Passformproblem war. N. ist noch Anfänger beim Nähen und hat möglicherweise den Halsausschnitt nicht gleichmässig symmetrisch genäht? Wir haben also direkt am Halsausschnitt an der Besatznaht weiterprobiert und es scheint jetzt tatsächlich besser zu sein als vorher (was auch immer das tatsächliche Problem sein mag). 

We didn't manage to eliminate the stress wrinkles on the front that are going under the arms. And I think I know why: the armhole is too small. In the muslin, the armhole was awfully gaping at the front, which I pinned out. Therefore, the armhole was smaller, and the sleeve cap would not fit into it, so I had to adjust for that, too. Since N. has thin arms, I made the sleeve cap smaller at the front. Now that I see those wrinkles I'm sure that the right way would have been to lower the armhole instead. I did that now in the almost finished garment as much as it was possible while still being able to set the sleeves in again, and the wrinkles are reduced, but not gone.

Die Falten über der Brust haben wir nicht ganz wegbekommen, und ich weiss auch, warum: das Armloch ist schlicht und einfach zu klein. Am Probeteil stand das Armloch vorne ziemlich weit ab, also habe ich einen Keil abgesteckt und den Papierschnitt entsprechend verändert. Damit war das Armloch kleiner und der Ärmle hätte nicht mehr ins Loch gepasst. Um dafür auszugleichen, habe ich auch die Armkugel vorne etwas verkleinert - N. hat ja eh so dünne Arme -, und das war der Fehler! Ich hätte wohl besser die Armlochtiefe angepasst. Ich habe jetzt im Nachhinein versucht, noch etwas Tiefe aus dem Armloch herauszuholen, aber es hat nicht ganz gelangt. Die Falten sind zwar weniger, aber nicht verschwunden. 

Sorry, N.! I'll think twice while fitting your muslin next time! After all, I think the top is now wearable at least, and we learnt something.
By the way, N. is thinking about shortening the sleeves to a 3/4-lenghth. What do you think? (Photo pre-fitting)

Liebe N., es tut mir leid, diesmal hat es nicht ganz geklappt. Beim nächsten Probeteil werde ich zweimal nachdenken. Ich denke aber, das Top ist jetzt zumindest tragbar und wir haben was gelernt. 
Übrigens überlegt N., ob sie die Ärmel nicht auf eine 3/4-Länge kürzen soll. Was meint Ihr? (Foto ist ein Vorher-Foto)

More serger practice...

There was not much sewing going on in the last time, but I did make a smaller project, to get a bit more practice with my serger.
Do you remember the wool knit fabric I bought from Britex when I was in vacation in San Francisco last year?

In der letzten Zeit hatte ich nicht so viel Zeit zum Nähen, aber ich habe ein bisschen mit meiner Overlock-Maschine geübt. 
Das ist der Wolljersey, den ich letztes Jahr in den Ferien in San Francisco gekauft habe:

It has an interesting pattern: dancing women in their circle skirts, seen from above. Now I finally made something out of that fabric: the very popular peplum top from Burda magazine 8/2012.

Das Muster ist sehr interessant: nicht einfach nur Kreise, sondern tanzende, sich drehende Frauen in weiten Röcken, von oben betrachtet. Jetzt habe ich endlich etwas aus dem Stoff genäht, und zwar das sehr beliebte Schösschen-Top aus der Burda 8/2012. 

As I made it from a knit fabric, I copied the pattern one size smaller than my usual burda size, and I eliminated the elbow dart from the sleeve pattern. I cut the back on the fold and, instead of the zipper, added a small closure with snaps. For the "closure facing" I used the patterned stripe that runs along the selvage of the fabric. However it turned out that the closure wasn't necessary, I can easily get my head through without opening the snaps.

Da ich es aus Jersey genäht habe, habe ich eine Grösse kleiner als sonst abgepaust. Am Ärmelschnitt habe ich den Ellbogen-Abnäher entfernt. Das Rückenteil ist im Stoffbruch zugeschnitten und wird, statt mit einem Reissverschluss, mit drei Druckknöpfen am Hals geschlossen. Für den Untertritt habe ich das Musterband vom Stoffrand verwendet. Es hat sich dann herausgestellt, dass der Verschluss gar nicht nötig war, ich bekomme den Kopf leicht auch mit geschlossenen Druckknöpfen durch die Halsöffnung. 

All in all, I'm quite happy with the outcome. The colors of the shirt feel quite unfamiliar and loud, as I usually don't wear any red, but the wool knit feels so warm and nice and comfortable, perfect for the last cool days before spring!

Insgesamt bin ich mit dem Oberteil ganz zufrieden. Die Farbe fühlt sich für mich allerdings etwas ungewohnt und kräftig an, da ich sonst niemals Rot trage. Aber das Oberteil ist so schön warm und angenehm zu tragen, gerade richtig für die letzten Wintertage!
